Welcome to Brown's Ranch
Home of Sustainable Ranching

Brown FamilyThe Brown Ranch is located 5 miles east of Bismarck. My wife Shelly and I along with our son Paul run 250 Balancer®, Gelbvieh and Angus cows. This is our 25th year in the seedstock business. Our goal has always been to produce cattle that thrive in our northern environment. We believe that our cattle need to work for us – not us for them. You won’t see ‘show’ cattle on our ranch. They simply can’t perform and stand up in our environment. We have bred our cowherd to be moderate sized, sound, structurally correct, fertile cows that wean off heavy calves without creep feed. The average weight of our mature cows is 1275lbs. and yet the bull calves will typically wean off between 750 to 800lbs.

Along with this we have selected our cattle for superior carcass traits. Our herdbull battery has some of the largest ribeye areas in the industry. We have collected carcass ultrasound data for years and used that information to insure that the bulls we produce will sire calves that will be in demand by the feeder, packer, and ultimately the consumer.

We have partnered with Flat Lake Farms of Westby, Montana. Flat Lake Farms is owned by the Wayne and Chad Solberg families. The Solbergs run 250 Balancer® and Angus cows. In addition, they synchronize and breed a large percentage of their heifer calves. Many of these are for sale each fall. The cows are bred to some of the best Angus and Balancer® bulls in the business. The bull calves that result are shipped to our ranch in Bismarck.

After weaning, the bull calves are grown out on a homegrown, high roughage ration. This ration helps to insure the bulls will remain structurally sound for years. We select only the top 100 out of the 250 or so bull calves born for our annual sale.

Our motto is “Customer Satisfaction Is Our Top Priority” and we mean it. Every decision we make in our program has our customer’s best interests in mind. After the sale we feed, semen test and deliver the bulls, at our convenience, to your ranch. We also guarantee the bulls through the first breeding season. NEW NRCS CONSERVATION CAMPAIGN

Conservation…Our Purpose. Our Passion. The purpose and passion for conservation is shared among many. It is shared between NRCS employees and partners who help people help the land. And it is shared by the landowners with whom we work. Our passion is manifested through the benefits derived from stewardship of private lands—benefits we all enjoy, such as cleaner water and air, improved soils and abundant wildlife habitat.   Learn about our stories, the stories of conservation made possible through a shared purpose, a shared passion and a shared commitment to conservation.
